ABOUT JOHN HODGSON

John recently finished the UK and Ireland No.1 Premiere tour of 'I Should Be So Lucky', the official Stock, Aitken and Waterman musical, as Musical Director. He is now working as a freelance MD and MT keys dep across the UK.

John has been involved in music and musical theatre from a young age. From principal percussionist for county music services to playing in the pit for local amateur dramatic groups, the progression to musical direction was a natural one.

John graduated from the University of Warwick in 2021 with a degree in History. He focused specifically on African American History and race relations, and the Italian Renaissance, including a dissertation on the intermedi of Medici weddings in Florence during the sixteenth century. Throughout his time at Warwick he was able to MD in a number of productions, including Dogfight and Songs for a New World. He also co-composed two original musicals: Antarctica and Primary.

John finished his MA in Musical Direction at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in autumn 2023. Following a variety of projects, he finished the year as MD / Keys 1 for Big Fish at the Edinburgh Fringe. He was involved with theatre groups across Scotland and MD-ed productions including Shrek and The Addams Family with Captivate Theatre during their 2022 Edinburgh Fringe run.

Post-graduation John worked as a rep coach at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama followed by brief return to RCS as emergency cover staff before joining the tour of ISBSL.

John's key skills include: rep coaching, ensemble singing coaching, conducting (baton and piano), arranging / orchestrating and accompanying. He also has extensive experience with Sibelius and Logic Pro X, especially for the creation of click and backing tracks. He has programmed and used Mainstage on a number of occasions. John is also a drummer/percussionist and violinist and his full CV is available upon request.
